Hair Loss in Women: Cause & Natural Treatment

Hair loss in women – this is not as rare as one might think. For those affected, it is usually very stressful, after all, full, shiny and healthy hair is the beauty ideal par excellence and THE epitome of femininity.

What causes hair loss in women can have and what you can do against it, we explain to you in this article.

If you discover a hair here and there every day on your pillow, clothes, in the sink and a few more in the hairbrush, this is far from hair loss, but absolutely normal.

Each of us loses about 50 to 100 hairs a day. Since each hair has a limited lifespan, it falls out after some time and a new one grows back.

However, if you notice that you are losing an excessive amount of hair and this condition lasts for a long period of time, you should definitely have it checked out by a dermatologist.

If you lose more than 100 hairs a day, you may be suffering from hair loss

Many women suffer from hair loss, especially after childbirth. During pregnancy, the body produces increased estrogens, which causes the hair to remain in the growth phase longer than usual. In some women, the hair even becomes thicker and shinier during pregnancy. After birth, the estrogen level suddenly drops – as a result, the hair enters the so-called resting phase and can fall out more.

Birth control pill

After discontinuation or even when taking the contraceptive pill, some women may experience thinning hair or hair loss due to the change in hormone balance.

Hormonal changes during menopause often lead to thinning hair or hair loss. Estrogen levels drop, resulting in too many male hormones (dihydrotestosterones) in the body. In women who are genetically hypersensitive to these, the hair consequently becomes thinner or falls out.

Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antibiotics, beta blockers, or antacids can trigger hair loss in women.

Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism

With hypothyroidism, hair usually becomes dry and dull and often falls out. Hyperthyroidism means that more thyroid hormones are produced than normal. The hair grows faster as a result, but it also falls out again more quickly and becomes thinner and thinner.

Iron deficiency

In order to divide, the cells of the hair follicles need many nutrients, vitamins and trace elements. Due to an iron deficiency, they are no longer sufficiently supplied and die, which can lead to increased hair loss in women.

Constant pressure or pull on the hair root

If you often wear too tight hairstyles, such as a strict ponytail, the hair on your forehead and temples may fall out prematurely because the hair roots are pulled strongly. Therefore, try to wear your hair loose as often as possible.

Hair loss in women can have several causes

Diffuse hair loss

In this case, the hair on the entire head becomes thinner and falls out more, especially in the crown area. Diffuse hair loss is triggered, among other things, by hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause or the pill, as well as by medication, an iron deficiency or thyroid disorders.

Hereditary hair loss

This type of hair loss is the most common. Here, too, the hair in women becomes thinner overall and falls out evenly, especially at the crown. Over time, it may also thicken towards the back or on the sides. As a result, the scalp shows through more.

Circular hair loss (alopecia areata)

This type of hair loss occurs when bald patches form on the head. This is an autoimmune disease in which the hair roots are attacked. In some cases, permanent hair loss occurs, while in others the hair grows back in the bald areas.

Scarring hair loss

This hair loss is caused by inflammatory skin diseases or skin damage. In the case of a damaged hair root or burns, new hair can no longer form in the affected areas.
